Les W. Dewar Gallery
I implement a mixed media approach to create symbolic images and figures combined with abstract colours, designs, and textures. These contrasting elements work together to portray what I call "visual narrations." Subjects explored include the landscape, cultural and social issues, spiritual interpretations, and moral philosophies. These elements are visually woven into my art, along with abstract and expressionistic elements. Bright colour and contrast have been and are very important aspects of my work. My art has been influenced by Byzantine Art (Early Christian Art), the Minimalist movement, American Pop Art of the sixties, and more recently, my studies of Native American art and culture. These significant and artistic components of our society have influenced the way that I perceive and interpret the world. I do not supply explanations of individual works of art, thus leaving the interpretive exploration to the viewer to experience. My work is done in the mediums of acrylic, watercolour, gouache, graphite, coloured pencil, ink, and collage. |
